Can a Type 1 connector be used with a CCS charging station?

A Type 1 connector cannot be directly used with a CCS charging station without an adapter, and even then, power delivery and OCPP 2.0.1 communication may be limited or incompatible due to protocol differences and hardware constraints.

How Adapters Affect Power Delivery

When using a Type 1 to CCS adapter, the physical connection allows for charging, but the power delivery is constrained by the lower maximum amperage of Type 1 connectors. This can result in slower charging speeds compared to using a native CCS connector. Additionally, the adapter may not support all features of the CCS standard, such as higher voltage levels or advanced communication protocols.

For example, a CCS station designed for 50 kW output may only deliver around 22 kW when connected via a Type 1 adapter due to the limitations of the older connector. This mismatch can lead to inefficiencies and longer charging times for EVs that support CCS.

OCPP 2.0.1 Communication Implications

OCPP 2.0.1 communication relies on specific protocol support from both the charging station and the connected device. If a Type 1 adapter is used, the communication may not fully align with OCPP 2.0.1 requirements, especially if the adapter lacks proper signaling capabilities.

This can cause issues with remote diagnostics, firmware updates, and real-time monitoring through the Charge Management System (CMS). In practice, this means that operators using such setups may experience reduced visibility into charging sessions and limited ability to manage or troubleshoot issues remotely.
