A CCS1 connector cannot be physically used with a CCS2 charging station due to differences in pin configuration and mechanical design. While both connectors support DC charging, the CCS2 standard includes additional pins for enhanced communication and power delivery, making it incompatible with CCS1 hardware.
Physical and Technical Incompatibilities
The physical design of CCS1 and CCS2 connectors differs significantly. CCS1 uses a 4-pin configuration for DC power, while CCS2 incorporates a 5-pin setup that includes extra communication channels. This means a CCS1 plug cannot fully engage with a CCS2 socket, and vice versa. Attempting to force compatibility may result in damage to the charging hardware or failure to establish a secure connection.
These mechanical differences also affect how the charging stations communicate with vehicles. CCS2 supports more advanced OCPP 2.0.1 protocols, which enable features like dynamic power control and real-time diagnostics. CCS1 systems, limited to older standards, lack these capabilities and cannot leverage the full functionality of modern charging infrastructure.
Implications for OCPP 2.0.1 and Offline Operation
When using a CCS2 station with OCPP 2.0.1, the system benefits from improved communication protocols that support secure, real-time data exchange. This is especially important for fleet operators and utility-scale deployments where remote diagnostics and load management are critical. CCS2 stations can also operate effectively in offline modes, maintaining local control through edge computing platforms like Saha-Edge, even without cloud connectivity.
For operators managing mixed fleets, this incompatibility means careful planning is required when deploying charging infrastructure. A station designed for CCS2 may not support older CCS1 vehicles, potentially limiting access for certain users. However, many modern charging networks are transitioning to CCS2 to support future-proofing and enhanced performance.
