However, this functionality is limited to token-based authorization and does not cover the full scope of ISO 15118, which includes secure communication with the vehicle, cryptographic handshakes, and secure element management. For ISO 15118 compliance, additional hardware and software components are required, such as a secure element and certified communication protocols.
What this means for EV charging infrastructure deployment
For fleet operators or infrastructure providers deploying chargers in remote or low-connectivity areas, OCPP 2.0.1’s offline token validation is a practical solution for managing access. It ensures that charging sessions can begin and end without relying on real-time cloud validation, improving operational resilience.
However, for applications requiring ISO 15118 compliance—such as DC fast charging with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities—operators must ensure that their chargers include certified secure elements and support for the required communication protocols. This often means integrating additional hardware or software solutions beyond OCPP 2.0.1 alone.
