A Charge Management System (CMS) maintains session continuity during a protocol switch by preserving transaction data and ensuring communication compatibility between OCPP 1.6J and 2.0.1 endpoints. It uses internal state tracking and message translation to prevent data loss or session interruption.
How session synchronization works in practice
When a charger transitions from OCPP 1.6J to OCPP 2.0.1 mid-session, the CMS must manage two distinct communication protocols simultaneously. It retains the original transaction ID and relevant session metadata, ensuring that any data exchanged during the transition remains consistent. The system also translates messages between versions, mapping fields and commands to maintain compatibility without disrupting the charging process.
This process requires the CMS to maintain a dual-mode communication engine. It listens for both protocol versions and routes messages appropriately. If a command is issued in one version but expected in another, the CMS handles the conversion internally. This ensures that neither the operator nor the user experiences a break in service.
What this means for fleet operators and infrastructure providers
Fleet operators benefit from seamless session handling because it reduces downtime and avoids billing discrepancies. If a charger switches protocols mid-session, the CMS ensures that the charging session continues uninterrupted, and the billing system receives accurate data. This is especially important for large deployments where protocol upgrades are rolled out gradually.
Infrastructure providers rely on consistent session tracking to maintain compliance and operational visibility. A CMS that properly synchronizes sessions across protocol changes helps prevent disputes over charging records and ensures accurate reporting for regulatory or financial audits.
