Certificate-based authentication in PKI ensures secure communication between chargers and a CMS by using digital certificates to verify the identity of each device. These certificates are issued by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) and contain cryptographic keys that allow encrypted, bidirectional communication. This method prevents unauthorized devices from connecting and ensures data integrity during charging sessions.
How PKI works in practice
In a multi-tenant EV charging network, each charger is provisioned with a unique digital certificate signed by the CMS’s trusted CA. When a charger attempts to connect, it presents its certificate to the CMS. The CMS validates the certificate against its CA and checks that the charger’s identity matches its registered profile. If valid, the connection is established with mutual authentication, meaning both ends confirm each other’s identity before exchanging data.
This process is especially important in environments where multiple operators manage different parts of a network. It ensures that only authorized chargers can interact with the CMS, even if they are physically located in the same facility or connected to the same network infrastructure.
Why this matters for charge point operators
For CPOs managing large networks, PKI-based authentication provides a scalable and secure way to maintain control over who can access their systems. It eliminates the risk of rogue chargers or malicious actors impersonating legitimate devices, which could lead to unauthorized charging or data breaches.
It also supports compliance with security standards like ISO 15118 and NIST guidelines, which require strong identity verification for critical infrastructure. By implementing PKI, CPOs can ensure their charging networks meet evolving regulatory expectations while maintaining operational integrity.
