OCPP 2.0.1 Battery Cooling Status Reporting

OCPP 2.0.1 Battery Cooling Status Reporting

OCPP 2.0.1 enables DC fast chargers to transmit real-time battery cooling status data to fleet operators, supporting dynamic thermal management decisions. The protocol uses the NotifyReport message to send cooling-related metrics from the charger to the central system, which can then be used by fleet operators to optimize charging schedules and vehicle performance.

How It Works in Practice

The charger collects cooling data such as battery temperature, coolant flow rate, and thermal event flags during charging. This information is packaged into a ReportData structure and sent via NotifyReport to the Charge Point Operator’s backend. Fleet operators can then access this data through their CMS or ChargeSphere platform to monitor vehicle health and adjust charging strategies accordingly.

For example, if a vehicle’s battery is overheating, the system can trigger a pause in fast charging or reduce power output. This real-time feedback loop helps prevent thermal degradation and ensures safe, efficient charging operations across a fleet.

What This Means for Fleet Operations

Fleet managers benefit from proactive thermal monitoring by gaining visibility into how charging conditions affect battery longevity. This data allows them to make informed decisions about vehicle deployment, charging station utilization, and maintenance scheduling.

By integrating cooling status reports into their operations, fleet operators can also comply with manufacturer recommendations and regulatory standards that require thermal monitoring for electric vehicles. This capability is especially valuable in high-utilization environments like delivery fleets or public transit systems.
