OCPP 2.0.1 supports enforcing distinct battery thermal management policies for fast chargers and Level 2 chargers within the same network. The protocol allows charging stations to receive and apply specific charging profiles that include temperature thresholds and cooling strategies tailored to the charger type and vehicle battery characteristics.
How OCPP 2.0.1 Enables Policy Differentiation
The protocol’s ChargingProfile mechanism lets operators define unique charging behaviors per station or group of stations. For fast chargers, policies can include aggressive cooling protocols to manage heat buildup during high-power charging. Level 2 chargers, which typically operate at lower power, can follow less intensive thermal strategies. These policies are communicated via OCPP messages and enforced by the charging station’s control unit.
This differentiation is especially important for vehicles with varying thermal management systems. A vehicle equipped with advanced cooling for fast charging may require different parameters than one designed for slower Level 2 charging. OCPP 2.0.1 allows operators to configure these settings dynamically, ensuring compliance with vehicle manufacturer recommendations and safety standards.
Real-Time Compliance with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge
When integrated with ISO 15118 Plug & Charge, OCPP 2.0.1 ensures that battery thermal policies are applied in real time during the charging session. The charging station receives the vehicle’s charging needs through the Plug & Charge process and adjusts its behavior accordingly. This includes modifying the charging rate or applying cooling measures based on the vehicle’s thermal state.
Operators can also use OCPP 2.0.1 to monitor and log thermal events, providing data for predictive maintenance and compliance reporting. This real-time feedback loop helps maintain safe and efficient charging operations across mixed networks of fast and Level 2 chargers.
