OCPP 2.0.1 Charger Restart and Session Recovery

OCPP 2.0.1 ensures session recovery by maintaining session state on the Charge Point and automatically resuming charging after a power loss or reboot. The system uses persistent storage to retain session data and communicates with the Central System to re-establish the charging session upon reconnecting.

How Session Recovery Works in Practice

When a charger loses power and reboots, OCPP 2.0.1 relies on the Charge Point’s internal memory to store session details such as the transaction ID, charging profile, and meter values. Upon reboot, the Charge Point initiates a connection to the Central System and sends a BootNotification message. Once the connection is established, it sends a StatusNotification to report its state and then proceeds to resume the charging session using the stored session data.

This process ensures that the charging session continues without interruption from the user’s perspective. The Central System validates the session and confirms the restart, allowing the charging to proceed as if no outage occurred. This mechanism is especially important for fleet operators and commercial deployments where uninterrupted charging is critical.

For Charge Point Operators (CPOs), OCPP 2.0.1’s session recovery capability reduces operational overhead and improves reliability. It eliminates the need for manual intervention to restart sessions after outages, which can be time-consuming and error-prone.
