QR codes vs RFID for EV charging authentication

The choice impacts network integrity, user privacy, and compliance with charging standards.

Security strengths and weaknesses

QR codes rely on static or dynamic data that can be easily replicated if intercepted. They lack built-in encryption and are susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks. In contrast, RFID systems use cryptographic protocols that make unauthorized access significantly harder. RFID also supports secure key exchange and can be configured for mutual authentication between the card and charging station.

Multi-tenant networks face unique challenges with QR codes, as they often require shared access or guest credentials. This increases the risk of credential leakage and misuse. RFID systems, especially those with dynamic challenge-response mechanisms, provide better control over who can access which charging points and when.

Practical implications for charging operators

For operators managing shared or commercial charging infrastructure, RFID provides a more robust foundation for access control. It reduces the likelihood of unauthorized use and supports detailed audit trails. QR codes may suffice for low-security environments but are less suitable for networks where compliance and accountability are critical.

Operators should consider the lifecycle of authentication methods. RFID cards or tokens can be replaced or revoked if compromised, whereas QR code credentials may require network-wide updates or reconfiguration. This makes RFID more scalable for long-term operations in complex multi-tenant setups.
