Can a charging gun be physically swapped between Type 2 and CCS connectors?

Physically swapping a charging gun between Type 2 and CCS connectors is not possible due to their different mechanical designs and pin configurations. OCPP 2.0.1 handles connector type validation through standardized communication protocols and session management without requiring cloud connectivity for core operations.

Why physical swapping isn’t feasible

The physical design of Type 2 and CCS connectors differs significantly. Type 2 uses a 9-pin configuration, while CCS employs a 20-pin setup with additional pins for communication and control. These differences make it impossible to mechanically fit one connector into the other. Attempting such a swap would result in damage to the charging cable or vehicle connector.

Connector types also have distinct locking mechanisms. Type 2 uses a mechanical lock that engages with the vehicle’s charging port, whereas CCS incorporates a different locking system. The physical incompatibility ensures that only the correct connector can be inserted into a specific charging station.

This mechanical incompatibility is intentional and designed for safety. It prevents incorrect connections that could lead to electrical faults, overheating, or damage to the vehicle or charging infrastructure.

How OCPP 2.0.1 manages connector validation

OCPP 2.0.1 enables charging stations to validate connector types through standardized communication with the Charge Point Operator (CPO) backend. The protocol defines message structures that allow the charging station to confirm compatibility before initiating a session. This validation happens at the communication layer, not the physical hardware level.

Even without cloud connectivity, OCPP 2.0.1 supports offline session management by pre-configuring valid connector types and charging profiles. The system can still authenticate and authorize sessions based on local data, ensuring that only compatible connectors are used for charging.

This approach allows for robust session handling in environments where network connectivity is intermittent or unavailable. It ensures that charging operations proceed safely and efficiently, regardless of network conditions.
