OCPP 1.6J uses a centralized approach where firmware updates are triggered by the Charge Point Operator (CPO) through the Central System, while OCPP 2.0.1 introduces a more flexible, decentralized model that allows for both remote and local update scheduling, with enhanced security and rollback capabilities.

How Firmware Updates Work in Practice

In OCPP 1.6J, firmware updates are handled via the UpdateFirmware request, which requires a specific URL and a time offset for when the update should occur. The process is less granular and does not support concurrent updates across multiple charging stations. OCPP 2.0.1 improves this by introducing the FirmwareStatusNotification and GetInstalledFirmware messages, enabling better tracking and control of update progress.

OCPP 2.0.1 also supports a more robust update process with features like staged rollouts, where updates can be applied in phases to reduce risk. It allows for more granular control over update scheduling, including the ability to define update windows and prioritize critical updates. This makes it easier for fleet operators and large-scale deployments to manage updates without disrupting operations.

For CPOs managing large networks, OCPP 2.0.1’s improved firmware handling means better operational control and reduced downtime. The ability to schedule updates during off-peak hours and monitor progress in real time allows for more predictable maintenance windows. It also supports better compliance with evolving security standards, which is critical for maintaining trust with end users and regulatory bodies.

OCPP 2.0.1’s enhanced rollback capabilities are particularly valuable in environments where reliability is paramount. If an update fails or introduces issues, the system can automatically revert to a previous version, minimizing service disruption. This is a significant improvement over OCPP 1.6J, where recovery from failed updates often required manual intervention.
